Abstract:
The work of Paulin Hountondji can be seen as a political struggle the main purpose of which is nothing but the well-being of African societies. Yet, it is known that an important part of this work, the most evident probably, has a lot to do with the struggle for science and the requirement of the universal embedded in the criticism of ethnophilosophy developed by the Beninese philosopher. This reflection shows how theory and politics are precisely articulated in the thought of Hountondji. It brings to light the organic coherence related to the project of an intellectual tradition which is both concerned with idealities and rooted enough to assume the pretension of bringing to the world efficient solutions to particular problems of the continent where this intellectual tradition emerges. Keywords: theory; politics; epistemology; liberation; universal.
