Abstract:
The Fang ethnic group is a community of Bantu origin. For many generations, it has employed terminology specific to each field of activity. Medicine, a key area linked to the well-being of populations in Fang territory, now uses terminology influenced by the integration of French. Focusing on the treatment of sinusitis, this study aims to demonstrate the influence of French, as well as the associated implications and challenges, regarding health terminology in Fang territory. The analysis draws on U. Weinreich’s theory of language contact, on E. Haugen’s theory of linguistic borrowing and on W. Labov’s sociolinguistic approach. It is based on data collected from five traditional healers and thirty-two native Fang speakers living in the Estuary region of Gabon, processed using an online IPA transcriber. Thirteen medical terms were recorded and transcribed; their morphosemantic analysis shows that they all denote perceptible symptoms — fever, cough, headache — while no Fang term corresponds to sinusitis itself. This is the central finding: Fang traditional medicine names what can be seen, whereas terminology borrowed from French names the invisible entities of biomedical diagnosis. This article thus identifies French loanwords within Fang health terminology and highlights the absence of a standardised transcription system, pointing to the need for the creation of new terms in this domain. Keywords: french; fang; influence; health; terminology.
